Mason jar salads are one of our all-time favorite make-ahead meals. Why? First of all, they’re perfect to take with you on the go. Unlike regular Tupperware that might make for a soggy salad, mason jars allow you to layer your ingredients (including the dressing) so that everything stays crisp until you’re ready to eat. Even better, mason jar salads can last for several days in the fridge. With a little prep, you can potentially make a week’s worth of lunches ahead of time. When it comes to making a filling, nutritious mason jar salad that stays fresh, you have to keep two things in mind: 1) Choosing the right ingredients and 2) How you layer those ingredients.

Tip 1: Make it a full meal. When constructing a salad, make sure you think about macronutrients. Meals with healthy proteins, fats and carbohydrates are always going to be the most nourishing and filling for our bodies. Lettuce and/or other fruits and veggies normally take care of the carbohydrates, meat or a vegetarian option for protein and then something like avocado and/or olive oil will give your salad some healthy fat.
Tip 2: Don’t forget texture. The tastiest salads are always the ones with various textures. From soft and smooth to crunchy or chewy, it’s always helpful to vary the texture of your ingredients. Nuts always provide a great crunch while dried cranberries can give your salad a satisfying chewiness.
Tip 3: Wet ingredients on the bottom. Just because you make a salad in a mason jar doesn’t mean it won’t get soggy. The key is how you layer the ingredients. Start with the wettest and work your way up to the driest. Normally this means dressing first, any fruits or vegetables, followed by your lettuce and lastly, nuts and seeds.
